Abstract

Nowadays, recreation and leisure play an essential role in individual well-being and social development. Beyond meeting the need for rest, these practices significantly contribute to inclusion, mental health, the building of social bonds, and personal growth. This work presents key concepts, examines the current context, and highlights international and Cuban experiences where recreation has had a positive impact on communities.  Our objective is to analyze the importance of leisure and recreation as tools for comprehensive well-being and social development within communities. These activities provide physical, emotional, and social benefits and are key to strengthening social cohesion and quality of life. Based on the analysis of successful initiatives, the study emphasizes the need to promote public policies that guarantee equitable access to recreational spaces and programs.  Furthermore, the implementation of accessible recreational therapies for all ages and social groups is proposed, which can enhance personal development, inclusion, and institutional engagement. Recognizing recreation as a fundamental right allows us to move towards healthier, more equitable, and humane societies.
