Abstract

Introduction: Social media has transformed the way teenagers interact, communicate, and access information. However, its use has also raised concerns regarding its impact on aspects such as mental health, academic performance, and sociability. This study analyzes the positive and negative effects of these platforms on the lives of adolescents, highlighting their influence on key areas of development. Objective: The main objective of this study is to identify the effects of social media use on adolescents, assessing their influence on mental health, academic performance, and social interactions. It also seeks to propose strategies to encourage a healthy and balanced use of these platforms. Methodology: This research has a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach. Results: The results revealed that 70% of adolescents use social media more than three hours a day, which directly influences their academic performance and sleep patterns. 60% of adolescents reported feeling pressure to meet social validation standards. However, benefits were also identified, such as access to educational resources and strengthening emotional support communities. Conclusions: The impact of social media on adolescents is ambivalent, with both positive and negative effects. While these platforms can be useful for learning and social connection, excessive use can lead to problems such as anxiety, addiction and decreased academic performance. It is essential to promote digital education and self-regulation strategies to mitigate risks and maximize benefits at this crucial stage of development.
